The American Lawn Š November 2009 Update The Last Mowing of the Season Unless you have fescue thatÕs still growing, or leaves that need to be mulched or picked up, itÕs time to mow one last time and pack away your mower for the season. I know that doesnÕt disappoint many of you, especially with the shorter days and football games on every weekend. If you do have bermudagrass or zoysia, topgrowth has pretty much stopped, with winter dormanacy slowly taking over. Once we get a good, hard freeze, the stems and blades will turn completely brown for the winter. ItÕs a good idea to mow one last time, giving the turf a nice, even cut for over the winter. Cool-season turf such as fescue will continue to grow slowly until winter really sets in. Many fescue areas are in the shade of trees also, so mowing in order to pick up leaves is a good practice. If you have a good mulching mower, feel free to just mulch the leaves, and they will decompose back into the soil. If your leaves arenÕt too heavy, this is a good practice. DonÕt allow a thick layer of leaves to sit on top of tender fescue seedlings from this fall, as that will damage tender seedlings and turf. ItÕs a great idea to go ahead and prepare you mower for next spring before storing it away. That way it will be ready to go next spring. Drain the gas out of the tank and clean up the mower. Sharpen the blade, change the oil, and clean the spark plug. And if you donÕt want to do all this yourself, take it to your local mower service shop, as theyÕd love to service it now versus next spring when the rush is on. Helping the Holiday Spirit at the BOK Center If youÕve been downtown at TulsaÕs new BOC Center at night, youÕve probably enjoyed the new blue lighted trees along the south entrance. LawnAmerica/Christmas Dˇcor recently upgraded our original installation from last year, doubling the amount of lights in them. We used the new energy-saving LED mini-lights on the trees, so they really look nice. Our Christmas elves are busy working helping our Christmas Dˇcor customers have a more enjoyable Christmas season with the gift of lights. Contact us now for a proposal and information on complete professional Christmas light service from Christmas Dˇcor. Spring Baseball Right Around the Corner Work continues on our youth baseball field that LawnAmerica is building at the Hutcherson YMCA in north Tulsa. Aaron Wilshire and our friends at Oklahoma Landscape & Irrigation volunteered their time Saturday to install our irrigation system. So if the weather continues to cooperate, we should have new sod installed within a week. You can still help towards the field by sending donations to the Hutcherson YMCA or to LawnAmerica. All donations to the YMCA are tax-deductable. After fencing is installed and the turf roots down, we should be ready for young kids to be playing baseball by next spring. Many thanks to Aaron Wilshire at Oklahoma Landscape & Irrigation for doing the irrigation system at the field as a donation. A Time of Thanks! At this time of the season, we thank you for being a LawnAmerica customer. If you are a military veteran, we thank you for your service to our country on this Veterans Day. Thanksgiving is coming up later this month, so we are giving thanks for all the blessings and freedoms we do enjoy in this great country, and in this great state of Oklahoma we live and work in.
