Title: City of Tulsa Beings Mowing City Parks

Description:

Tulsa pays contractors $35 an acre to mow about 1,400 acres of parkland -- some more, some less than others.

"It costs us about $35,000 per cycle, so every two weeks, it costs us $35,000 to mow," said Bob Bledsoe, City of Tulsa.

A few parks are in better shape than most. Braden Park is just one of three Tulsa parks that's been adopted by Lawn America. Last year, the company offered to treat the parks with weed killer and fertilizer for two years. Read more...

Just a few miles north of the new Oneok Field, a brand new Tulsa youth baseball field is set to open also. A year ago, an empty, weed-infested vacant lot sat just to the south of the Hutcherson YMCA off Pine & north Peoria. The YMCA owned the property, but had no funds in their budget to do anything with the land.

At the same time, local business owner Brad Johnson from Lawn America wanted to build a nice youth baseball field for kids in north Tulsa as their major community service project for 2009. More...

Also commonly called yellow nutgrass or water grass, this vigorous plant produces wide triangular stalks in threes from a center point at ground level. Other similar sedges are purple nutsedge and green kylinga, which are very difficult to control. Being a sedge, it thrives in damp soil conditions, which we obviously have had with the excessive rain for the past several months.

After a long and cold winter, your lawn will be ready to spring into action soon, with warmer weather approaching. Bermudagrass, which is the dominant turf type in our area, is subject to winterkill during extremely cold winters. Although the actual low temperatures have stayed above zero degrees this winter, the duration of our cold snaps have been pretty long. It’s too soon to say if bermudagrass has been affected by the winter.
