How Sweet it Is! Winter is a good time to apply lime or sulfur to correct a pH problem your soil may have, and your lawn's soil should be monitored periodically by pH testing. The optimum pH level for most grass types is in the 6.2 to 6.8 range. If our soil test shows that your pH is not in the range of 5.9 - 7.2, we'll advise you to apply either lime or sulfur. About 35% of our lawns are too acidic, with a pH below 5.9. When soil becomes this way (determined by soil testing), there can be serious growth problems. That's when we apply lime 35 - 45 pounds of granular lime per 1000 sq. ft. to bring a high pH down to proper levels. Liming can "unlock" nutrients in the soil that are locked up by sour or acid soil and make them more readily available to the turf. So the main reason we apply lime is to neutralize soil acidity. The reaction of limestone in the soil is very complex. The primary benefits include: - Increasing the availability of major nutrients in the soil. - Supplying calcium and magnesium - necessary soil nutrients. - Reducing the toxic effects of aluminum and manganese. - Increasing microbial action in the soil. Micro-organisms provide the biological activity which helps control thatch and builds your soil. Only about 5% of our lawns are too alkaline, with a pH above 7.2. Sulfur needs to be applied at 10 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. to bring a high pH down to proper levels. If your lawn is not performing as well as you'd like, consider a soil test or an application of lime. But remember, lime does not move in the soil, so it must be evenly applied. Lighting Provides for a Better Display Many home and business owners have been looking for ways to "go green" in their every day lives by using products that have less impact on the environment. This lifestyle has been working its way into the holiday season for years through a variety of products. LED technology provides our customers that are looking for a much brighter and energy efficient Christmas with this option. We have chosen to use LED lights beginning this year as the standard in our lighting displays simply because the lights are much more durable (watch this video on our Christmas website!), burn brighter, and are more energy efficient than the incandescent bulbs that we've used in the past on our displays.
