Our LawnAmerica seeding process consists of several components:
- Aeration or double-aeration to help break up the soil for better seed to soil contact and allows more efficient watering.
- Sowing a good rate of a quality Pennington 3-way blend of Justice, Greystone, and Penn 1901 Blue Tag Tall Fescue.
- Apply a starter fertilizer to help with germination and growth of grass seedlings.
- Rake bare areas.
- Leave you with detailed watering instructions, which must be followed religiously!
- Return in about 3 weeks to overseed any thin areas with more fescue seed.
If you choose to do your own seeding, please pay close attention to the type and quality of fescue seed you purchase. Much of the seed you’ll find at the box stores or hardware stores are inferior, with small amounts of weed seed and other crop seed (which are weeds also) in the mix.
What About Store-Bought Seed?
For example, this is the highest priced seed at one of the local stores—a 5lb bag selling for $20. That little 5 lb bag will only seed 500’ of turf area. If you look on the label (below), it contains .01% weed seed and .25% other crop seed. Both are unacceptable. Other crop seed is often a grass such as Orchardgrass for example, which cannot be controlled once it is growing in a tall fescue lawn. We battle this constantly at LawnAmerica, where we go out on fescue turf which has been seeded with inferior seed, leading to perennial grasses which we cannot do anything with chemically. They just have to be pulled up, and many are tough to do so.
You can purchase our LawnAmerica seed which has zero weed seed and practically zero other crop seed, insuring that your lawn is getting the best turf possible. We’ll sell a 50lb bag for $100, or 25 lbs. for $60. If you want us to deliver to your door, we’ll need to add $10, or you can just stop by our office and pick up. With the purchase of a 50lb bag, you’ll have enough seed to cover 5,000’ of turf. You’ll only pay $2/lb, compared to $4/lb at the big box store. We really don’t make much money at this; we just want to make sure that if you do your own seeding, we’ll not have a bunch of weeds to deal with next year, some of which we cannot even control. With our seed, you can be assured that your lawn will have a quality turf next year.
